What is Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)?

Gum disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures that support the teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums become swollen and red due to inflammation, which is the body’s natural response to the presence of harmful bacteria.

Factors such as smoking, hereditary gum disease, diabetes and poor oral hygiene can contribute to this. It is therefore important that you maintain immaculate oral hygiene with mechanical removal of plaque by the use of a manual/electric toothbrush, floss or inter-dental brushes and regular maintenance by your dental professional.
